We love heading up to the White Mountains along Rte 93 and stopping along the various scenic spots throughout Franconia Notch– the Flume, Diana’s Baths, Cannon Mountain, Echo Lake, etc. The paved biking/walking trail that runs along this section is great! Pedaling north is great exercise– but the return bike ride south is a downhill breeze (literally!)

My children, now parents, had an endless amount of imagination. One such sport born of imagination was trashketball. All that is needed are two trash cans and a ball. From there it is a basketball game played with trash cans as a basket, a paved drive, neighborhood friends and a ball.
We also learned early on in the 1980’s, to rent a lake side cottage near to home. Travel time for us was 20 minutes and yet we seemed miles away from responsibilities at home. The advantage; easy import for friends from home who would come for the day or a night or two. Parents would also come; the payment; a meal. I think we saved more than we spent!

Pack a lunch or snacks and spend the day visiting the forts positioned along NH & Maine’s Seacoast: Fort McClary, Fort Foster, Fort Constitution, Fort Stark & Fort Dearborn at Odiorne. Great coastal scenery and a chance to explore our history, too!

The Bennington Museum is now showing State of Craft. This is the first crafts retrospective ever, and it’s a really important and impressive show. From the time Aileen Webb began the Vermont Crafts Council, and then the American Crafts Council in 1938, to the present, many craft artists are represented, in five media: wood, metal, pottery, glass, textiles. This is a must-stop on your home Stay-cation.
